Your happiness makes me happy. Unicorn autism dancing to a different beat shirt. My wife and I are good friends with a family who has a 12-year-old son with non-verbal autism. We are friends with the entire extended family so he really feels like my little cousin. He can say individual words to tell you what he wants or needs but his speech is very limited. The longest string of words he will say is superhero movie quotes. Though he does that less and less now. Most of my interactions with him have to do with video games and maybe LEGO’s or plastic characters from his favorite cartoons.

He is such a sweet and loving boy and I would love to learn a way for better communication between us. I know he’s smart but it’s like he’s stuck in his own head. Do you have any tips or insight into how to communicate with him? I realize that every case of autism is different but I figured I’d ask. I’ve had to make the same list in therapy! Along with 5 things I’m grateful for every day, even if it’s something like clouds or music. I think those lists were really helpful for me 🙂 I’m glad you’ve found something you love doing! It really helps me 🙂 Especially on those super bad days where all I want to do is cry and hide because I am lonely or confused or just feeling like the world is really big and I am lost in it. I am so glad you have something in your life that brings you joy. Always look for the moments of happiness – they are what life is truly made of.

It is very very long. I could not have long hair if care workers did not help wash it and brush it! So I am grateful for their help! Long ago I was forced to have short hair because it was easier for others. I am so glad things have changed so much so I get long hair! Live on my own, do social things and be part of the community.
